Disability

The Disability Committee was formed in 1992 with the aim of seeking the full implementation of the 1990 ICTU Charter of Rights for Disabled People. Some of the committee members also represent workers with a disability on committees of the Department for Employment and Learning, the OFMDFM and other committees in the community.

The committee initiated the production of a set of disability guidelines for shop stewards on all the relevant aspects for negotiations with organisations, employers and affiliated unions.

The Disability Committee leads on a wide range of issues.  These include:

  • Decent work for people with Disabilities
  • Policy work to ensure that people with disabilities are not left behind
  • Supporting Disability Champions in the Workplace
  • Developing partnerships with a wide range of Civil Society organisations.

The Disability Committee recently held a seminar on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).  Disability Action facilitated the seminar and more information on their shadow report can be found here
